Disaster could strike at any time. Now is the time to make sure you have what you need to be prepared. Have you checked your emergency kit? Do you have an emergency kit? If not get one started and make sure you have the basics:
Water - you should have at least 1 gallon of water per person for about 3 days.
Food- again you should have a 3 day supply of non- perishable food. Don't forget your handheld can opener for those cans!!
Radio- Battery powered or hand crank.
First aid kit- you will want bandages of assorted sizes, topical ointments, peroxide, alcohol pads, pain relievers.
Small supply of common tools- pliers, wrench, screwdriver, knife, etc.
Solar Chargers- these can be easily found at most department stores or online stores. They are mats that you can lay your electronics such as cell phones on to charge.
In case of a "shelter in place" you should also have duct tape, dust masks and plastic sheeting.
As I stated above, this is a basic emergency kit, you will know better what you and your family will need to wait out a disaster so you can add to this kit as you see fit. You can also take this a step further and create a " get home" bag. This bag should at least include:
Protein Bars- enough for a couple of people for a day or two.
A couple of bottles of water- a couple of bottles per normal occupancy of vehicle.
Small first Aid kit-dont forget your pain relievers !
Small tool set- again... screwdriver, flashlight, wrench, pliers, knife, and an emergency life hammer to break a window if needed.
Blanket - small emergency blanket will be fine. More than one blanket is even better.
Knife- utility style.
Small amount of money- maybe $10 or $20.
Rock salt or kitty litter- these can be used to get " unstuck" if you get stuck in the snow or ice.
The " Get Home" bag is a perfect idea for your college student , business traveler, mom, dad, son, daughter, etc.
It is better to be safe than to be sorry. Get your emergency kits ready and hope you NEVER have to use them!
